Many clients with digestive problems experiment with various dietary strategies or opt for quick fixes before considering my assistance. They struggle not only with repairing their damaged gut function but also with one of the most common feelings when it comes to digestive health, doubt: "I've tried everything; how will this be any different?" I understand the frustration. They've explored low carb/keto/low FODMAP diets, intermittent fasting, trendy supplements, cleansing teas… All while managing their demanding lifestyles. So, OF COURSE, it seems like nothing is working. One way I guide clients through this is by helping them clarify their vision and revealing the true reasons behind the lack of success with their previous attempts.
Here are three of the most common mistakes they make: 1. ELIMINATING GLUTEN FOR ONLY A COUPLE OF DAYS and assessing any symptom changes. Gluten-sensitivity is not the root cause of digestive insufficiency, it is its consequence. Gluten elimination may help with symptom relief but, alone, it does not address the root cause of bloating and irregular bowel movements. When no major relief is noticed after a few days, many people go back to their old eating habits. 2. BUYING A FAMILY PACK OF RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE probiotics from large warehouse stores can lead to disappointment when a significant positive change in symptoms isn't observed within a few days. Probiotics can be highly effective, especially when incorporated as part of a comprehensive dietary and lifestyle program featuring a good-quality supplement. Regular supplementation, when combined with other gut-supporting daily habits, addresses the root problem. The efficacy of probiotics depends on factors such as the type of bacterial strains, their quantity per capsule, and the preparation method, with price often reflecting product quality. Low price typically indicates low quality and results in negligible effects. It's important to note that probiotics alone cannot fully heal the gut. 3. FOLLOWING VARIOUS RESTRICTIVE POPULAR FOOD PLANS, including fasting, often promoted as the "ultimate solution" for bloating, gas, or chronic diarrhea. These eating plans can be excessively strict, making long-term adherence nearly impossible, particularly without guidance from a specialist. When eliminating a wide range of foods on keto, low-FODMAP, elimination, or paleo diets, creating a fully compliant meal plan can be challenging. This leads to frustration, stress, and the continued presence of the excluded foods in some meals. A compromised gut function did not develop overnight and it may take some time to see lasting and permanent changes. Do not be discouraged if you don’t achieve your desired outcome on the first attempt. I encourage you to conquer any doubts and dedicate time, patience, and perseverance to a successful gut-healing plan.
