GAPS or Gut and Psychology/Physiology Syndrome is a condition which stems from gut microbial imbalance (dysbiosis) and affects the entire body, in particular the nervous, digestive and immune systems. It consists of two groups based on what body functions are impacted most severely:
Gut and Psychology Syndrome - includes disorders such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADD/ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, behavioural problems, eating disorders, memory and cognitive problems, etc.
Gut and Physiology Syndrome - includes a variety of digestive disorders (IBS, IBD, colitis, gastritis, celiac disease), endocrine disorders (thyroid, adrenal, PMS, etc), autoimmune disorders (multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, psoriasis, etc) and many other such as ME, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, allergies, asthma, hay fever, migraines, food intolerances, etc.
The GAPS nutritional protocol, which was created by neurologist Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, incorporates three components:
